Volcan Miravalles
A few kilometers east of Rincon de la Vieja, another volcano soars out of the Cordillera de Guanacaste. It is the Volcan Miravalles, the highest peak (2,028 m) of the mountain chain. Although currently dormant, geothermal activity visible around the village of Las Hornillas (700 meters above sea level) are a strong indication that, with little warning, the sleeping giant could at any time become active again.
A research and observation station is located south of the volcano near the village of La Fortuna on the Rio Pizote. The station, called Proyecto Geotermico Miravalles, was established to find ways of harnessing the volcano’s energy to produce electricity.
